The Swift Current Broncos’ woes against the Lethbridge Hurricanes continued during a New Years Day matinee Tuesday in Swift Current.
The Broncos squandered a 4-1 third-period lead on their way to a 6-4 loss to remain winless in three attempts against Lethbridge this season.
The Broncos took a 4-1 lead early in the final frame on Adam Lowry’s 25th goal of the season before the Hurricanes stormed back with five unanswered goals.
Remi Laurencelle, Tyler Wong, Sam McKechnie, and Daniel Johnston all scored to put the Hurricanes in the lead for good. Brady Ramsay also scored for Lethbridge, who improved to 19-17-1-4.
The Broncos had an opportunity to tie the game late but Graham Black wired his penalty shot off the crossbar late in regulation before Graham Hood scored into an empty net to seal the win.
Landon Bow allowed five goals on 35 shots to drop to 3-3-1-0 for the Broncos. Hurricanes veteran Ty Rimmer made 32 saves in his 17th win of the season as he leads the Western Hockey League with 1192 saves in 38 appearances.
Coda Gordon remained hot for the Broncos with two more goals, giving him five goals and eight points in the past three games. Ryon Moser opened the scoring with a powerplay marker, his 12th goal of the season.
Lowry finished with a goal and an assist, extending his WHL leading point streak to 15 games, with 15 goals and 12 assists over that stretch.
Swift Current missed a spot to climb the Eastern Conference standings as they remain seventh with a 17-19-3-2 record.
The Broncos will be on the road Friday to visit the Kootenay Ice and will close the season series against the Hurricanes in Lethbridge on Saturday.
