The Swift Current Broncos made it a perfect weekend as they won for the second time in as many days with a 3-2 win over the host Brandon Wheat Kings Sunday.

Levi Bews, Graham Black, and Josh Derko all scored for the Broncos in the win. All three goals came at even-strength as the Broncos were unable to score on five man-advantages.

Jayce Hawryluk scored a powerplay goal for Brandon to tie it 1-1 midway through the first period and Alessio Bertaggia scored in the final minute to cut the deficit to 3-2 and make things interesting.

The first period featured three fights as Daniel Dale, Tanner LeSann, and Zac Mackay all dropped the gloves for the Broncos over a 7:39 span.

Eetu Laurikainen made 26 saves on 28 shots to improve to 9-8-2-2 for Swift Current.

Curtis Honey made 32 saves in the loss for Brandon.

“I think we played really well,” said head coach Mark Lamb from Brandon. “It was a real solid performance and probably one of the best games our defense has played as a whole group. Five-on-five I thought we really controlled the game. The only down part was that our powerplay wasn’t very good, which has been really good for the last couple of games.”

The Broncos had only one win in five games heading into the weekend.

“It was a huge win on the road and a big weekend for us to vault us right back. We have been playing really good hockey lately and not getting the points we deserved. It was just a great win and a great weekend for us,” said Lamb.

The Broncos now have three points during the first two games of the eight-game season series against Brandon and improved to 9-9-3-2 overall this season.

The Broncos will now have five days off before visiting the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday.
