17-year-old list player Tanner LeSann opened some eyes with a Gordie Howe hat trick in the first period as he helped Team Black to a 5-0 win at the Swift Current Broncos Annual Black and White Intra-Squad Game Sunday.
Eetu Laurikainen and Travis Child looked strong in goal for Team Black as they combined for the shutout.
LeSann set up Dillon Heatherington’s goal to open the scoring, added an unassisted marker 31 seconds later, and then dropped the gloves with Sine Chadi to complete an outstanding first period.
“I thought I did pretty good,” said LeSann, who led the Yorkton Midget AAA Harvest with 42 points in 40 games last season. “I got a couple assists, a goal, and a fight. I just tried to give it my all out there and tried to get noticed.”
Team Black led 2-0 after one period and got goals from Liam Bilton and Spencer Copan in the middle stanza. LeSann helped set up the fourth goal with a perfect pass to Copan on a two-on-one to complete his three-point outing.
Paige Maul closed the scoring in the third period when he knocked home a rebound midway through the period.
Steven Myland made the start for Team White, allowing four goals, while Landon Bow took over halfway through the game and allowed one goal.
Team Black's Bobby Zinkan and Team White's Dakota Odgers squared off in the only other tilt.
“We came out flying,” said Zinkan. “We were definitely outworking them. We played hard the whole way through. We just capitalized on our opportunities and it turned out well for us.”
Broncos’ 2012 first round pick Glenn Gawdin was on the wrong end of the shutout.
“It was pretty good. We just didn’t get that many bounces, but I think we played alright. It was high tempo and I just tried to keep up with it,” he said after his first Black and White Game.
Bow, a fourth round pick in 2010, took over midway through the second period in goal for Team White.
“It was my first time going in halfway through the game in this camp,” he explained. “I got ready before that and focused up. I went in, felt really good going in after that little shooting at the beginning I just felt ready to go and I was in the zone.”
The Broncos will open the preseason when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors Tuesday in a game that will feature mostly rookies.
