Female Bantam Colts overcome injuries to top tournament

The Swift Current Female Bantam Colts hockey team defeated the Medicine Hat Hounds 4-2 to capture the A championship at the Moose Jaw Annual Female Hockey Tournament over the weekend.

Jill Kennedy's hat trick and an impromptu goaltending performance from defenseman Caitlyn Janzen for two periods helped lead the injury depleted Colts to their fifth consecutive win of the tournament.

Jill Kennedy's hat trick and an impromptu goaltending performance from defenseman Caitlyn Janzen for two periods helped lead the injury depleted Colts to their fifth consecutive win of the tournament.

Brooklyn Hagman also scored for the Colts, who got single assists from Ashley Giesbrecht, Hagman, and Sydney Seib.

The Colts advanced to the final with a 4-3 defeat of the Moose Jaw Warriors in the semi-finals behind a 32-save performance from Danielle Yuzik.

Kennedy netted a hat trick, while Hagman tallied the game winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Courtney Trudeau added a pair of helpers followed by singles from Camille MacBean, Giesbrecht, Hayley Chalk, and Seib.

In the round robin the Colts defeated the North Battleford Sharks 10-2, the Regina Jaguars 4-2, and the Weyburn Canadians 3-2.

Karrah Newkirk paced the attack with five goals, followed by Kennedy with three, Hagman, MacBean, Trudeau, and Giesbrecht with a pair each, and Brooke Chabot with a single.

Giesbrecht led the way with four assists, Chabot followed with a trio of helpers, and Kennedy picked up a pair.

Newkirk, Hagman, MacBean, Tenille Gering, Chalk, Seib, and Yuzik each picked up a single assist.
