Both golf courses in Swift Current are nearing full openings this spring.

John Gaudet is the Golf Pro at Chinook Golf Course and is looking forward to another season.

"The golf course is pretty good. Surprisingly with all the snow, it is pretty darn dry out there. There didn't seem to be a lot of moisture out there. We could really use some rain right now, that is for sure. Other than that, we have the front nine open with the greens and tee boxes open," said Gaudet, who expects to have the entire course open any day. "It is pretty good right now for this time of year. It is the earliest we have ever opened."

Gaudet explained why people should head to Chinook saying, "I think that one of the best things about the Chinook Golf Course, and I can say this honestly, is that it is probably one of the best conditioned golf courses in Western Canada. People who come in here from Calgary and Vancouver thinking that it is just a dinky little nine hole golf course, they have no idea until they start playing that it is unbelievably well conditioned."

"Doug Leavins does just a wonderful job here. That is the prime reason why you should be playing here every chance you get," he added.

The Chinook is not hosting any major events this season but does host events such as Husky Oil, Southwest Terminal, Christ the Redeemer, and Kiwanis tournaments.

"We try and keep the golf course open on the weekends mostly for green fee play so that members and guests can play," said Gaudet.

Over on the other side of town the Elmwood Golf Course is nearing a full opening.

"We opened up the temporary greens last week on Thursday, April 1 and we opened the driving range the week before on Friday, March 26," explained General Manager Sheldon Reinhart. "The clubhouse is opening on April 16th upstairs, so that's when we'll be open full time for that. The golf course will be anywhere from that 16th to the 30th, somewhere in there depending on weather, so that's kind of what we're looking at for the golf course."

Reinhart explained that the course double tarped each green this year for the first time which helps keep the greens five to 10 degrees warmer underneath.

He said it looks like status quo for another season at he Elmwood.

"All of our managers are back and everything's basically the same, really just hoping to get out to an early start and get some good weather and go from there. Our membership numbers are pretty much identical compared to last year, so everything's pretty much the same."

He hopes the season will get off to a better start than 2009 where cold, wet, and windy weather hampered golfers.

"It was really bad in April and May and like I said if we can get a couple of good weeks, or at least one good week in April, then May will get off to a good start and we'll be looking pretty good. We've had a few walkers out there who've said the course is a little bit dry, so it would be nice to get a rain here in the next couple of weeks, but other than that it's been really good."

The Elmwood will host the usual compliment of tournaments with a few being moved around.

"We've got a provincial SaskPower tournament, which is about 180 golfers, at the end of August. Men's and ladies, anyone who works for SaskPower. It's kind of a big deal. Each year they pick a different golf course and this year they picked Elmwood."
