Swift Current Minor Football has returned for it’s eighth season.  This year is a very exciting year for the organization with the move back to our new and improved Highland Park location and the construction of our brand new storage and meeting facility.

What does this mean to minor football in the city? After years of living out of temporary storage units, moving to a permanent heated facility will not only give SCMF a safe place to store and prolong the life of the football equipment, but it will also give us a location to hold meetings, as well as coaching and referee clinics to further grow the sport of tackle football in our city. During the construction of this facility, several community partners stepped up and donated materials and labor in order to make this dream a reality. We would like to thank Riverside Electric, Husky Energy, Stark & Marsh, Swift Building Supplies, Len’s Plumbing & Heating and Swift Steel for all their assistance in making this facility possible.

This Saturday, SCMF will hold their annual Jamboree event for it’s Atom and PeeWee players from 8:30-11:30am.  We’ll also be holding a free BBQ for minor football players and their families as well as hosting a Ribbon Cutting event to celebrate the grand opening of this new facility. Please consider this your invitation to join us in celebrating this event Saturday, August 20th at 12 Noon.

This year, approximately 160 children will participate in the league with some major changes in store.

In the Atom Division (Ages 9-10), we will play this season with four Swift Current teams and one team based in Gull Lake. “For years, the surrounding communities have supported our program, which is absolutely awesome! But, that’s meant driving in for practice twice a week and again on the weekends for games. Having a team in the Atom division based in Gull Lake give rural kids more of an opportunity to play the game and it allows their parents to only have to worry about one trip to Swift Current per week as practices will be based in Gull Lake with a local coaching staff,” says league communications director, Darwin Gooding.

It’s business as usual in the Pee Wee Division with three teams however, the Bantam division will feature one travelling team this year, playing 12 man football in Moose Jaw, Weyburn and right here in Swift Current. This exposure to 12 man football prior to arriving at the Comp. High School will help ensure SCMF will continue to be a great feeder for the Comp. Colts program.
