The Swift Current Comp Colts football team is hoping that Friday will be the date of their first win of the 2010 season. The Colts will host the Estevan Elecs at 4 p.m. as both teams attempt to win their first games of the season.
“Obviously it's a battle of two teams looking for their first win of the season,” explained head coach Derek Murdoch. “Estevan has been very close in all three of their losses, so we know that they will be coming here ready to compete. They are a very well coached football team, so we know that we'll have to be ready to make plays in order to get our first win of the season.”
The Elecs, now in their second season in the Moose Jaw High School Football League, may be winless, but they have been close in every outing, including a 15-10 loss to the undefeated Vanier Vikings on Saturday. The Elecs have only been out-scored 38-26 during their 0-3 start.
The Colts are coming off a 28-12 loss to Moose Jaw Central on Saturday to drop to 0-3.
Grade 10 receiver Jaylen Mayall provided a spark with nine catches for 102 yards and scored both Colts touchdowns. Curtis Akre made three receptions for 80 yards as quarterback Josh Siemens finished 15 of 36 through the air for 185 yards.
Unfortunately the Colts were able to gain only 21 yards on six rushing attempts compared to the Cylones’ 172 yards on 36 rushing attempts from seven different ball carriers.
The Colts finished with eight first downs on 206 yards of total offense, while the Cyclones racked up 15 first downs on 350 yards of total offense.
“We feel we’ve gotten better each week,” added Murdoch. “We battled against Central, and if you take out a couple of their big plays at the start of the game, we’re right there. We had the ball in the red zone several times and didn't come away with points and we know that’s something we need to improve on. The guys are feeling better about where we are now, as they see that they can compete if everyone on the field is contributing. Hopefully we can keep the progression going and we’re playing our best football come playoff time.”
