The Swift Current Comp. Colts football team fell 15-1 to Moose Jaw Peacock to open their 2009 season on Thursday afternoon.

In their first game back in the Moose Jaw League after a one-year absence the Colts allowed a pair of early touchdowns before settling down to battle the defending champions to a standstill for the remainder of the contest.

"We talked about being ready at the start, and we weren't ready," said head coach Derek Murdoch following the hard-fought loss. "We gave them 13 points on two touchdowns in the first three minutes, both of them were just mistakes. After that we battled, they got a safety and we got a single. It was close and they are a good football team. I think that our guys have to start realizing that we are a good football team too."

Conrad Flaterude scored the lone point for Swift Current with a booming punt for a single point.

"We have to get into better shape. It was obviously our first game and the guys were pretty gassed at the end so we are going to work on that," said Murdoch. "Our defense played their hearts out so we will keep working on that. Our offense just needs to move the ball, I mean our defense was just on the field too much."

Murdoch thought that the game proved that his team could compete with the league's top teams this season.

"I think it is huge and the biggest thing is that our guys are coming off the field at the end of the game mad now because they think 'oh man we should have been there' and that is the first time in a long time that these guys have probably thought that way about playing Peacock. So psychologically it is a big deal."

The Colts will look to get into the win column next week when they travel to Estevan on September 12th.
