Swift Current Curling Club hosting 2014 Mixed Doubles Curling Provincial Championships this weekend
Swift Current will be the site of the 2014 Mixed Doubles Curling Provincial Championships from Friday until Sunday.
The Swift Current Curling Club will host the eight-team event, presented by Living Sky Casino, where teams will compete to be Saskatchewan’s representative at the National trials in Ottawa next month. The Canadian Champions will then travel to Scotland to compete at the World Championships.
The tournament will open Friday with the first draw at 12:30 p.m. and draws to follow at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The opening ceremonies are slated for 8:30 p.m. and a social in the curling club lounge will follow that evening.
Play will continue on Saturday with draws at 10 a.m., 4 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. The playoffs will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. with the semi-finals at 12 p.m. and the championship final slated for 4 p.m.
The first World Mixed Doubles Championships took place in 2008 and was developed from the mixed doubles event at the Continental Cup of Curling.
Each team consists of one male curler and one female curler and the game format is played over eight ends. Each team has only six stones and one of those stones from each team is prepositioned on the centre line before every end of play. One player delivers the first and last stones of the end while the other player throws the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next. No stone, including those in the house, can be removed from play prior to the delivery of the fourth stone of an end.
