Eight teams took part in the CurlSask Tim Hortons 2014 Youth Spiel in Swift Current on January 3.

Some young curlers in the region had the opportunity to experience the bonspiel environment at the Tim Horton's Under 14 Youth Spiel in Swift Current on Saturday.

"We run a series of 14 of these throughout the province. It is to introduce kids to curling bonspiels, mostly with the goal of participation and just getting out there and seeing what a bonspiel is like. It is a little bit of an introduction to the competitive side of it as well,” explained Mitch Minken, a CurlSask board member who helps out in the South West Region and organized the event at the Swift Current Curling Club.

The event hosted eight teams Saturday at the tail end of the holiday break.

"This was a good turnout. This time of the year during the Christmas break is tough, but eight teams is really good. We had a nice turnout from throughout the Southwest with teams from Maple Creek, Shaunavon, and Assiniboia as well as some local rinks," explained Minken.

The Assiniboia rink, skipped by Connor Gronsdahl, won all four of their games to win the event, capped by a 5-4 win in the A Final to win gold. They defeated a young Maple Creek Girls team skipped by Morgan Robinson. Robinson opened with a 5-4 loss to Swift Current’s Theo Lautsch. Her team bounced back with a 9-3 win over Swift Current’s Nadine Steinley. The Maple Creek Girls then clinched top spot in their pool with a 4-3 win over Maple Creek’s Makayla Scheller on the final stone.

The Maple Creek Mixed team, skipped by Scheller, went on to win silver with a 10-1 win over Maple Creek’s Parker Campbell in the B Event final. Scheller had opened the tournament with a 15-1 win over Steinley and an 11-2 win over Lautsch.

Swift Current’s Grady Rogers won bronze when his team defeated Steinley 7-3 in the C Event final. Lautsch defeated Shaunavon's Logan Thienes 3-2 to claim the D Event final.
