The poise and maturity of one local sports team earned them provincial recognition last week.

The Swift Current Comp. Colts curling team was awarded the SHSAA Saskmilk Sportsmanship Award at a special ceremony Friday.

The Colts were comprised of Skip Grady Lamontagne, 3rd Jessie Wallace-Perkins, 2nd Brennan Schommer, lead Ian Howell, and coaches Mr. Kissick and Mrs. Olynick. The Colts finished in fourth spot at SHSAA Provincials in Assiniboia in early March.

SHSAA Assistant Executive Director Lyle McKellar was in Swift Current on Friday to present the banner to the Colts curling team.

“It is one of the few activities in the SHSAA where the players are basically the officials. It demands integrity,” said McKellar during his presentation.

“To be recognized by your peers that were at the championship as one of the teams to be nominated for the Sportsmanship Award says a lot about you,” McKellar continued.

McKellar explained that the curling Sportsmanship Award winners are selected using a different process than the four other sports.

“We receive team nomination forms from the various teams. Whereas most of the situations, the officials, the host community, and the SHSAA representatives will submit their nominations.”

During his presentation he shared some of the comments about the Colts that were submitted during that process. “They have great respect for their opponents. They had great respect for the host committee and they respected the game of curling as a part of high school athletics. They were great ambassadors of the Swift Current Comp. and of Swift Current.”

Kissick has been coaching curling at the Comp. for eight years.

“It is nice to see them get a banner and some recognition for the effort that they put forward. They handled themselves very well, even though they got defeated they were still pretty happy about how the overall event went,” he said.
