The Swift Current Comp. Colts basketball team finished with one win during weekend action in Prince Albert but will be looking for some improved results this weekend when they host their annual home tournament.
The Colts opened the tournament on Friday with an 89-62 loss to the host Prince Albert Marauders as the Colts had no answer on the perimeter to nine Marauders three-pointers.
Jordan Hildebrand led the scoring with 14 points, while Dallin Martin had four rebounds and four assists.
In their next game the Colts came up with their worst shooting performance of the season during a 44-41 overtime loss to Saskatoon’s Mount Royal Mustangs. Connor Chau hit a pair of free throws to send the game to overtime but foul troubles allowed the Mustangs to clinch the win from the charity stripe.
Chau led the Colts with 10 points and three assists, while Ty Vandersteen added six rebounds, Colten Siemens had six steals, and Justin Kehler blocked two shots,.
In their final game the Colts held on for a 63-53 win against the feisty Yorkton Regional Raiders.
The Colts made 24 field goals on 38 per cent shooting and shot a season high 77 per cent from the free throw line in the win.
Sidney Heuer scored 13 points, while Vandersteen cleaned up 12 rebounds. Kale Scheger had three blocked shots, Chau added four assists, and grade nine guard Jaylen Mayall had two steals.
We must limit our turnovers in order to have a chance to score - coach Adam Jackson
The seventh-place finish leaves the Colts with a 7-12 record as they host the Speedy Creek Shootout this weekend. The Colts will open the tournament on Friday at 3:45 p.m. against North Battleford John Paul II.
Head coach Adam Jackson has three goals in mind for his team this weekend.
“To play with tremendous heart and hustle; to execute on both offense and defense; to make it to the ‘A’ side and hopefully finish 2-1 or better,” said Jackson.
The Colts are averaging 18 turnovers per game and will need to take care of the ball this weekend if they hope to achieve those goals.
“We must limit our turnovers in order to have a chance to score. We must rebound defensively and limit our opponents to one shot on offense; each player needs to take responsibility for blocking out their check. We have to make some perimeter shots,” said Jackson.
The eight-team event will also include teams from Weyburn, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, and Estevan. The gold medal game is slated for Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
