Indians homer twice and get complete game from Thompson to take early series lead over Weyburn

Steve Thompson

The Swift Current Indians picked right up where they left off in the regular season with a 6-1 win over the visiting Weyburn Beavers Friday to open the Western Major Baseball League playoffs.

Steven Thompson allowed only seven hits, four walks, and one run, while striking out 10 in the complete game for the Indians.

Offensively, the Indians knocked out 13 hits, including home runs from Eros Modena and Eric Sams. Modena, who led the league in regular season runs batted in, finished three-for-four with two RBI, and a run scored. Matt Spillman had a pair of infield singles, a walk, and scored twice.

Josh Johnson, fresh off setting the league season stolen base mark, singled and stole two bases in the first inning to help the Indians erase an early deficit. Taylor Steen and Hunter Owen also had two-hit performances.

The two teams will meet for game two of the best-of-five series on Saturday in Swift Current at 7:05 p.m. at Mitchell Field.
