Swift Current Indians
The Swift Current Indians fell behind 3-0 in the first inning for a second straight game but used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Yorkton Cardinals 9-3 to clinch another Central Division title Wednesday.
All nine hitters in the Indians' line-up had at least one hit and scored a run, led by centre fielder Eros Modeena, who singled twice, stole a base, knocked home two runs, and scored a run.
Fernando Pena recovered nicely from a tough first inning to get the win. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in the first inning, but only allowed two hits over the next six innings while striking out seven.
Chad Kim and Darren Kolk both made scoreless relief appearances for the Tribe.
The Indians improved to 26-18 in their third straight win, while Yorkton dropped to 18-27 but still clinched their first playoff appearance in five seasons.
The Indians will now face the Weyburn Beavers in the opening round of the Western Major Baseball League playoffs. The best-of-five series will begin Friday and Saturday in Swift Current. Games three and four will be played Sunday and Monday in Weyburn. Game five, if necessary, would be played Tuesday beck in Swift Current.
The Indians will conclude the regular season with two games against the Moose Jaw Miller Express, beginning Tuesday in Moose Jaw and then Wednesday back in Swift Current.
