Swift Current rallies late to score comeback WMBL win over Regina

The Swift Current Indians scored five runs over their final two at bats to collect a come from behind 8-4 win over the visiting Regina Red Sox.

The win improves Swift Current's record to 16-13 as the Tribe remains in a tie with Moose Jaw for top spot in the Central Division standings. The Indians are now 8-7 at Mitchell Field, and Thursday's win marks the Swift Current first win over Regina in three meeting this season.

Trailing 4-3 after three innings, Swift Current frustratedly stranded runners on third base in the fourth and fifth innings before their rally attempts gained traction in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tribe began a two-out rally with a double by Justin Lee, and a walk by Eros Modena. Eric Sams connected for an RBI single to cash in Lee, and Modena scored all the way from first on an outfield error.

Swift Current built on their 5-4 lead with a trio of insurance runs in the eight. Swift Current loaded the bases with Lee singling home Liam Goodall from third, Modena drew a bases loaded walk to cash in Matt Spillman, and Eric Sams collected an RBI to score Josh Johnson.

Regina scored all their runs in the third inning, punctuated by a Steve Hazel three run home run.

Tribe starting pitcher Fernando Pena enjoyed a solid 12 strikeout effort in picking up the win. The Rosenburg, Texas product is now 2-1 on the year after his seven and two third inning performance where he allowed eight hits and walked just two. Zach Manley earned the save by striking out two and not giving up a hit while facing just four batters.

Regina starter Nathan Falkenstine was tagged for four runs on 10 hits during six and two thirds innings of work. Tyler Shumpert suffered the loss after giving up Modena's eventual game winning run while facing four hitters in the seventh inning.

After splitting back to back games on home field, Swift Current goes back on the road for a tough four game in three night weekend, playing twice in Melville on Friday and back to back games in Yorkton on Saturday and Sunday. Swift Current then returns to Mitchell Field on Monday to take on the league leading Lethbridge Bulls.
