The Swift Current Indians lost their Western Major Baseball League season opener 9-2 to the visiting Weyburn Beavers Saturday. The Indians led most of the way before the Beavers scored nine unanswered runs late in the game.

Second baseman Matt Spillman finished two-for-four with a walk, a stolen base,  and two runs batted in for the Tribe. Right fielder Justin Lee had three hits in his debut for the Indians as well. Justin Woods and Kevin Bettencourt came around to score on a Spillman single in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-0 lead.

Sean Callegari made a strong start for the Indians, allowing only three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings while striking out eight.

The Indians bullpen could not lock down the win, allowing all nine runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Indians will visit the Regina Red Sox on Sunday afternoon in their first road game after their original season opener was rained out on Thursday.
