The Swift Current Midget Indians appear destined for the championship game of the 2013 AA Western Canada Baseball Championships with two wins Saturday.
With a 3-0 record, the Midget Indians will likely play for gold on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mitchell Field. They still have to conclude the round robin on Sunday at 12 p.m. against the Brandon Knights (2-1).
The Midget Indians needed just six innings to defeat Prince George 14-2 Saturday morning. Brandon Schultz went the distance on the mound and was named Player of the Game by the opposition coaching staff. Reid Fritzke highlighted the game with a towering home run to leadoff the sixth inning that landed midway up the trees that sit well beyond the leftfield fence at Mitchell Field.
The Indians continued to mash that evening when they slugged three home runs in a 9-5 win over the Lloydminster Twins. BJ Moen pitched five strong innings and hit a grand slam on his way to Player of the Game honours. Lloydminster finished the round robin 3-1, meaning a three-way tie between Swift Current, Brandon, and Lloydminster is still possible if Brandon defeats the Indians.
The Bantam Indians have a 1-2 record and will wrap up the round robin Sunday morning at 9 a.m. against Victoria. They defeated the Olds Spitfires 14-4 in their only game Saturday.
The PeeWee Indians will face the Winkler Diamond Dogs (1-2) on Sunday at 12 p.m. They lost 10-5 to Burnaby and 10-0 to Humboldt on Saturday to drop to 3-0.
