The Swift Current Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for a 10-7 win to earn a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five Eastern Conference playoff series against the Melville Millionaires.
The host Indians scored five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Mario Sanchez, who finished two-for-five with two runs scored and three runs batted.
Anthony Armanino earned the win for the Tribe, allowing one walk, five hits, and one earned run while striking out four over six innings to improve to 2-0 in the postseason.
The Indians bullpen allowed six runs over three innings but Cody Chartrand earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning.
Bryant Munoz finished with three hits, three runs batted in, and scored a run out of the second spot in the Indians batting order. Matt Henriksen, Taylor Steen, and Alex Schultz also had two-hit games.
The series will continue Wednesday in Swift Current before shifting back to Melville for games three and four on Thursday and Friday. Game five, if necessary, would be played Saturday in Swift Current.
The Medicine Hat Mavericks defeated Okotoks 5-2 to take a 1-0 lead in the Western Conference final.
