Swift Current Indians
The Swift Current Indians disposed of the Weyburn Beavers in three straight games to advance to the second round of the Western Major Baseball League playoffs with a 6-2 road win Friday.
Chris Haddeland gave the Indians another quality start to earn the win. The WMBL First Team All-Star allowed only six hits, two walks, and one earned run over six innings while striking out seven.
The Indians only managed six hits but created six runs with two walks and four Weyburn errors.
They scored once in the second inning, added two runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Weyburn scored runs in the fifth and seventh innings but could not recover from their game two loss in 11 innings after leading 4-1 early in Thursday’s pivotal contest.
Mario Sanchez led the offense with two hits, two runs batted in and a run scored. Alex Schultz also had two hits at the bottom of the order and cam around to score a run. Leadoff man Matt Spillman walked and singled, scored a run, and brought another home.
Cody Chartrand and Seth Haehl both worked in relief to preserve the win.
The Indians will now await their second round playoff opponent. Melville took a 2-1 lead over Regina in the best-of-five series with a 1-0 win Regina. Game four goes Saturday in Regina.
