The Swift Current Bantam Indians erased the sting of settling for a silver medal at AA Provincials by winning the Baseball Regina SGI Bantam AAA League over the weekend.
They earned their first ever league title with a 7-4 win in 10 innings over the Regina Buffalos in the championship game Sunday. Tanner Fritzke had a strong start in the final before he was relieved by Taylor Bowers, who went the rest of the way for the win.
“Yeah it felt really good,” said head coach Darwin Schultz. “We had the momentum even that we had lost at Provincials. I thought the boys came out this weekend with a vengeance and played well all weekend to win it.”
The Indians had finished fourth in the regular season with a 0.604 winning percentage courtesy of a 14-9-1 record. They opened their weekend with a 3-2 win over fifth seeded Melville, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Bantam Indians then upset top-seeded Estevan (12-1-1) in the semifinal with a 6-4 win.
Schultz said it was a good team effort.
“Everything came together, from our pitching, to our hitting. The boys, as a group, really came together and played really well as a team.”
The Bantam Indians will participate in the 2013 Western Canadian Championships as the host team on August 16-18. 10 members of the team will also represent Zone Three at the Bantam Selects Tournament in Saskatoon August 9-11.
