Swift Current Indians

The Swift Current Indians opened the Western Major Baseball League regular season with a 5-2 win over the host Saskatoon Yellow Jackets Friday.

Veteran Cody Chartrand picked up the win as he allowed two hits, three walks, and one unearned run while striking out nine batters over six innings.

The Indians scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead before each team scored once in the seventh to close the scoring.

Leadoff man Matt Spillman finished three-for-four with three runs batted in and one run scored to lead the offense.

Centrefielder Alex Schultz got on base with a single and a walk, stole a bag, and came around to score two runs.

Jake Gonzalez worked three innings in relief, allowing one run, while striking out six.

The Tribe will be in Moose Jaw to face the Miller Express on Saturday and will host their home opener on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. when the Edmonton Prospects visit Mitchell Field.
