The Swift Current Indians got an outstanding pitching performance from Brian Ranta as they opened the playoffs with a 7-1 win over the visiting Lethbridge Bulls Tuesday.

Ranta allowed only five hits and one run with a walk and five strikeouts to help the Indians open the best-of-five opening round playoff series with a win.

"I felt a lot better," said the Clackamas, ON native. "I am getting back to how I usually pitch and there was some great plays behind me and my off-speed felt a lot better than it had for a while."

Ranta held a talented Lethbridge batting order to only few baserunners.

"I just needed to hit the spot where we wanted to throw it and don't give them anything that they want to. We kind of knew what they were wanting to do with the ball and we wanted to keep it away from their power alleys," he explained.

Right-fielder Aaron Dunsmore picked up where he left off in the regular season with three hits and three runs batted in, including a two-run double in the eighth, the Indians only extra-base hit on the evening.

Lethbridge scored their only run in the seventh inning when slugger Jesse Sawyer hit a leadoff blast to centre.

That was the only blemish on Ranta’s evening and Mitch Ludtke came on to get the final six outs, striking out three along the way.

Game two will be played Wednesday at Mitchell Field beginning at 7:05 p.m. Garrett Anderson is expected to get the ball for the Tribe. Anderson finished 4-1 with a 2.54 earned run average for the Tribe this season, including a win over Lethbridge on July 13,
