2014 Boomtown Days Stampede
Another rodeo in the Southwest proved to be a welcome host for Southwest cowboys and cowgirls. The Boomtown Days Stampede saw three Southwest event winners and 16 total Southwest money winners at the Canadian Cowboys’ Association event in Shaunavon on July 18-19.
Highlighting the annual rodeo was a Southwest sweep of the money in Bareback, led by Consul’s Monty Koopman, who scored 75 points on Newtown to earn $540. Swift Current’s Linden Woods was close behind in second after a 70-point ride on Free Shipping for $405. Tompkins’ Jason Hofer rounded out the money-winning trio in third spot after a 68-point ride on Dark Knight for $270.
Mankota’s Shawn Williamson was also a winner in Shaunavon. He won Tie Down Roping in 8.4 seconds to earn $690. Waldeck’s Tuftin McLeod was close behind in second spot in 9.3 seconds for $600 and Swift Current’s Blaine Switzer was eighth in 11.8 seconds for $60.
Maple Creek’s Hallie Anderson continued a strong season in Shaunavon with a first-place finish in Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 16.25 seconds for $324 as Southwest cowgirls took four of the top five spots in the event. Maple Creek’s Mardi Yarshenko was third in 16.65 seconds and Cassidy Gordon, also out of Maple Creek, finished fourth in 16.67 seconds. Mankota’s Kassidy Williamson placed fifth in 16.80 seconds as well.
Maple Creek’s Colby Gilbert placed second out of 57 entries in Ladies Barrel Racing at the Boomtown Days Stampede. She rounded the barrels in 16.01 seconds for $1,206. Carievale’s Karly Lanz won the event in 15.96 seconds.
Maple Creek’s Quinton Bock finished just three points off the lead in Bull Riding when he scored 78 points on Bring It to pocket $480 for a second-place finish. Gleichen, Alberta’s Wyatt Laughlin topped the event with an 81-point ride on Bring It.
Maple Creek’s Mike Gordon placed sixth in Saddle Bronc after a 70-point ride on New Idea for $1,211. Meadow Lake’s Tyler Wilson won the event with 77 points aboard Ames No Change.
Tuftin McLeod was back in the money when he worked with his dad, Scott, to place seventh in Team Roping in 8.4 seconds for $450. Maple Creek’s Tanner Jones combined with Justin Dubeau (Redcliff, AB) to place eighth in 9.1 seconds for $180. Lance Brown (Virden) and Brett Olson (Southey) won the event in 6.5 seconds.
