One of the first Canadian Cowboys' Association Rodeo events in the Southwest this season provided a perfect location for competitors close to home. 15 Southwest cowboys and cowgirls earned money at the Sandhill Rodeo in Lancer on June 7-8, including five event winners.
Among the winners was Maple Creek's Colby Gilbert, who topped the 62-cowgirl field in Ladies Barrel Racing with a 15.66-second run for $1,175. Maple Creek's Taryn Parsonage placed fifth in 16.14 seconds for $562.
The Southwest's success in Bareback this season continued in Lancer as Southwest cowboys swept the top-three spots. Tompkins' Jason Hofer picked up the win with 76 points on City Lights for $436. Maple Creek's Brady Bertram was second with a 74-point ride on Broken Trail for $336. Swift Current's Linden Woods was third with a 73-point ride on Undecided for $235.
Mankota's Kassidy Williamson added a win in Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 16.4 seconds for $259. Mankota's Hallie Anderson was right behind her in second spot in 16.55 seconds for $194.
Maple Creek's Lane Link also won Novice Bareback with a 68-point ride for $179 and Leader's Cody Resch topped Novice Saddle Bronc with a 65-point ride for $212.
Shamrock's Kevin Turner worked with Garrett Brownlee (Moose Jaw) to place second in Team Roping in 6.4 seconds for $1,285. The event was won by Logan Delinte (Wolseley) and Brett Mcleod (Weyburn) in 6.2 seconds.
Maple Creek's Mike Gordon placed second in Saddle Bronc with a 71-point ride on Tsn for $402 and Piapot's Casey Bertram was fourth with 71 points on Wiggles for $262. Brandon's Kirk Thompson won the event with a 76-point ride on Messenger.
Waldeck's Tuftin McLeod placed second in Tie Down Roping in 9.5 seconds for $570, just behind Copper Sands' Jeremy Harden, who finished in 9.1 seconds.
Hazenmore's Chanse Switzer finished third in Junior Steer Riding with a 70-point ride, two points back of Biggar's Ty Ireland.
Kyle's Chad Hantelman rounded out the Southwest money winners in fifth-place in Steer Wrestling in 6.8 seconds for $181. Innisfail's Blake Gagnon won the event in 4.5 seconds.
