Track and field season begins in Moose Jaw

Many of the Southwest’s high school track and field athletes made their debut at the Moose Jaw Invitational at Guthridge Field on Saturday. Weather conditions were less than ideal but a number of strong performances were registered by Southwest athletes of all ages.

The Swift Current Comp. placed second in the team standings with 345 points, 104 points behind Moose Jaw AE Peacock Collegiate. Gull Lake High School finished sixth out of 22 teams with 161 points.

Shaunavon was eighth with 112 points and Maple Creek was right behind them in ninth spot with 97.50 points. Eastend placed 13th, Herbert was 16th, and Ponteix finished in 20th spot.

Among the highlights was Swift Current’s Marcus Kouri, who won the Quadrathlon by winning three of the four events over seven other competitors. Kouri won the Long Jump with a 6.27-metre jump, the 100 Metre Dash in 11.35 seconds, and the 800 Metre Run in 2:17.42.

Eastend’s Lane Richardson won three Junior Boys events to lead the Southwest in Moose Jaw. He easily won the 100 Metre Dash in 11.54 seconds and then added a win in the 200 Metre Dash in 25.30 seconds. He also won the Triple Jump with a 12.21-metre effort, 81 centimetres further than the second-place finisher.

Grade 10 Jade Addai had one of the top performances for the Swift Current Ardens. She won the Junior Girls 100 Metre Dash in 13.36 seconds and the 200 Metre Dash in 27.69 seconds.

Gull Lake’s Cassie Jans won a pair of Midget Girls events. She won the 400 Metres in 1:07.55 and added a first-place finish in Long Jump with a 4.41-metre effort, 35 centimetres further than anyone else.

Swift Current’s Karley Patenaude had a good day on the track as she won a pair of Midget Girls distance events. She won the 1500 Metre Run in 5:56.17 and then added a win in the 3000 Metre Run in 12:57.68.

Maple Creek’s Wyatt Ramsay picked up a win in the Senior Boys 200 Metre Dash in 24.08 seconds. He added a second first-place finish in Long Jump by flying 5.78 metres.

Shaunavon’s Jordan Voll won a pair of Midget Boys events. He placed first in the 100 Metre Hurdles in 15.96 seconds and then used a 37.91-metre effort to win Discus.

Swift Current’s Rhett Carlson had no problem winning the Junior Boys 400 Metre Run in 57.96 seconds. Swift Current’s Larissa Markewich added a win in the Junior Girls 3000 Metre Run in 12:54.46.

Gull Lake’s Taylor Kirwan was the top performer in the Midget Girls 800 Metre Run when she finished in 2:55.47. Herbert’s Nichole Peterson won Junior Girls High Jump by clearing the bar at 1.40 metres to top eight other competitors.

Ponteix’s Logan Larochelle picked up a win in Junior Boys 100 Metre Hurdles in 17.27 seconds. Maple Creek’s Parker Campbell won Midget Boys Javelin Throw with a 40.31-metre throw.

Swift Current’s Rhyse Coward won Midget Girls Discus Throw with a 24.06 metre heave, almost four metres further than any of the 17 other athletes in Moose Jaw.

Swift Current’s Tori Carlson easily won the Senior Girls 1500 Metre Run in 5:37.14 to finish over 20 seconds ahead of the field.

Swift Current’s Daylon Plewis added 10 points for the Colts when he won the Senior Boys 400 Metre Run in 53.71 seconds. Swift Current’s Dayton Spanier won the Junior Boys Discus Throw with a 28.26-metre effort.
