After a long absence, finally, independent wrestling is coming back to Swift Current.
Regina's Ringside Wrestling will be presenting an action packed five match card at the Salvation Army gymnasium on May 24, making the first time in three or four years since a wrestling event has been hosted in Swift Current. The Regina based independent wrestling company boasts the imposing Massive Damage, along with grapplers like The Wildchild, The Lion Warrior, Joey Vandetta, Billy Bones and The Hangman.
"It's going to be wild and wooly, but it's going to be a good time," admitted local promoter Dennis Hamm who is assisting with bringing Ringside Wrestling to the city.
"We've been trying to work to get a show in town, but it just wasn't working for the venue. You have to have at least a couple of hundred people that you can get in there to have any kind of viability."
Things recently came together to host the show, with Hamm and Ringside Wrestling now starting the process of advertising and attracting a crowd to the evening of entertainment.
"I've been a wrestling fan for I would say close to 45 years. I watched Stampede Wrestling when it was on TV with Stu Hart and Ed Whalen. I've met some of the wrestlers," Hamm admitted, noting that wrestling fans will enjoy the opportunity to come out and boo at the bad guys and cheer for the good guys.
"What they're urging is come out and have fun, watch something different, and just support two local charities that are well know in the City of Swift Current."
The event is a fundraiser for the Swift Current SPCA to assist them in keeping their Animal Shelter doors open. The evening will also help support the Salvation Army Food Bank, with non perishable food items being accepted at the door for the Food Bank.
The May 24 event will take place at the Salvation Army gymnasium (780 1st Ave. N.W.), and doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.
Advance tickets are available at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, the Swift Current SPCA Book Store, or from Dennis at 306-750-0118. Advance tickets are $15 and tickets are available at the door for $20.
