Rodeo season begins for many this weekend in North Battleford

Even though there were only a few Southwest cowboys at the second rodeo of the Canadian Cowboys’ Association 2014 season, a few of them were still able to return home from the Pierson Indoor Rodeo with money.

Matt Switzer, formerly of Swift Current, placed second in Tie Down Roping to earn $516, behind only Carievale’s Carey Bevan. Waldeck’s Tuftin McLeod placed seventh to bring home $44.

Tuftin also worked with Scott McLeod to place third in Team Roping for $779. Clint Weston (Cardston) and Brady Chappel (Moose Jaw) won the 28-team event for $1,190.

Brandon’s Kirk Thompson won Saddle Bronc with a 75-point ride on Powder N’ Paint for $351. Gladstone’s Bradley Dyck topped Bareback with a 75-point ride on City Wages to claim $324.

Solgirth’s Devon Porter won the Steer Wrestling competition for $453, while Cassandra Peters (Plumas) also won Ladies Barrel Racing in her home province.

Bengough’s Ashley Cleveland beat out 14 other cowgirls to win Junior Girls Barrel Racing. Oak Lake’s Bailey Plaiser won Novice Bareback with a 66-point ride for $133. Bengough’s Tyson Thue used a 62-point rode for first in Novice Saddle Bronc and a $162 payday. Southey’s Kyrell Mcdermit rounded out the money winners with a 68-point score to win Novice Bull Riding.

The 2014 rodeo season will get underway for many Southwest cowboys and cowgirls this weekend at the the North Battleford Kinsmen Indoor Rodeo from Friday until Sunday.

Among the Southwest competitors scheduled to compete are Casey Bertram (Piapot), Ross Kreutzer (Maple Creek), Cody Resch (Leader), and Mike Gordon (Maple Creek) in the 20-cowboy Saddle Bronc field. Jason Hofer (Tompkins), Monty Koopman (Consul), and Brady Bertram (Maple Creek) will all take part in Bareback.

Shaunavon’s Tanner Allemand will be the only Southwest cowboy in the 20-man Bull Riding field. Tyce McLeod (Waldeck), Tuftin McLeod (Waldeck), Shawn Williamson (Mankota), and Tyler Getz (Lucky Lake) will all race the clock in Tie Down Roping.  

Kyle’s Chad Hantelman and Val Marie’s Riley Hayes will both do battle in Steer Wrestling.

The 55-cowgirl Ladies Barrel Racing field will include Wyleen Hantelman (Kyle), Kristy Gilchrist (Maple Creek), April Williamson (Mankota), Cali Yarshenko (Maple Creek), and Jane Corey (Swift Current).

Among the 25-team field in Team Roping will be Waldeck’s Tee, Tyce, Tuftin, and Scott McLeod, Tanner Jones (Maple Creek), Riley and Ryan Hayes (Val Marie), and Ben Switzer (Hazenmore).

The Southwest will be represented by Hayden Briggs (Maple Creek), Cole Hartman (Lancer), Chad Hartman (Lancer), and Chanse Switzer (Hazenmore) in Junior Steer Riding. Switzer is the defending CCA Finals champion.

Junior Girls Barrel Racing will feature Mardi Yarshenko (Maple Creek) and Cassidy Gordon (Maple Creek). Leader’s Cody Resch will be among nine cowboys in Novice Saddle Bronc. He is the defending CCA Final champion.

The first CCA rodeo of 2014 to hit the Southwest will be the Dean Anthony Memorial Rodeo in Mankota on May 23-24.
