The Redneck Betties opened their fourth season of roller derby with a road victory Saturday. They were in Medicine Hat and came home with a 199-111 win over the Dirty South All Stars.

"I think we were more physically ready than we have ever been," said veteran jammer Jinger Vitis. "We have been working really hard because we knew it was going to be a hard year with so many changes. We knew that we were going to have to step it up a notch, so physically we felt more ready.

The Redneck Betties have been challenged with a significant amount of roster turnover heading into their fourth season.

"We played like a team. We were very cohesive on the track and we just knew where everybody was going to be. It felt like it flowed really well and you would just have to look at one another and you knew what that person was going to do for you. We didn't have to really speak to one another, whatever we needed to do we could do it with a look and we were able to execute it very well and all together," explained Jinger Vitis.

The Redneck Betties will now quickly turn their attention to their home opener.

"We were so excited to start the season off with a win and then to come home. We want to have a sellout crowd and we want to just go out there and put on an amazing game and just play our best in front of our fans. We just want to have a really good, hard-fought game."

The Redneck Veronicas, Swift Current’s B level team, were also in Medicine Hat. They dropped a 177-173 loss to the Regulators. "They played so well together," said Jinger Vitis. Wyld Chyld was named the Veronicas’ Player of the Game.

The Veronicas were rounded out by three junior players from the RaRa Riots. "For them to be able to step up and play at a B level and play with the Veronicas, they did so well," said Jinger Vitis. "I talked to a lot of the players after the game and they knew that there was juniors on the Veronicas, but they had no idea which of our players were actually juniors."

The Betties will host their home debut Saturday against NorSask’s Diefen-Break-Hers. The bout will begin at 7 p.m. at the Credit Union iplex.
