Junior SunDogs hosting weekend volleyball tournament

Four Swift Current Junior SunDogs volleyball teams will play on their home court this weekend at a pair of tournaments.

The 18U SunDogs will host their home tournament and the 16U SunDogs will step up to challenge the eight-team field as well.

The 18U SunDogs are coming off a fifth-place finish at the eight-team Sask Cup 2 in Prince Albert this past weekend.

The 18U SunDogs, coached by Les Collins, won four matches and lost twice. They opened the tournament with a win over the Prince Albert 16U Smashing Bananas (29-27, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon. They dropped to 1-1 with a straight set loss to the Estevan Giants (17-25, 18-25) later that afternoon. The SunDogs rebounded with a win over the Martensville Hitmen (25-17, 26-24) to finish their day with a 2-1 record.

The 18U SunDogs’ medal hopes ended Sunday morning in a close loss to the Melfort Storm (24-26, 22-25). They rebounded to defeat Martensville for a second time (25-18, 18-25, 15-11) and then defeated the Lloydminster Cannons (25-12, 25-19) to place fifth. The Estevan South East Giants defeated the Saskatoon Junior Huskies in three sets to win the tournament.

The 18U SunDogs will open their home tournament on Saturday at the Comp. at 1:30 p.m. against Oxbow. They will move over to Irwin School for games at 3:30 p.m. against the South East Giants and at 5:30 p.m. against Lloydminster. They will conclude the round robin at 7:30 p.m. back at the Comp. against Jonny’s Bad Habits.

The 16U SunDogs will open their tournament Saturday at Irwin at 2:30 p.m. against the South East Giants. They will move over to the Comp. to face Oxbow at 4:30 p.m. and Jonny’s Bad Habits at 6:30 p.m. The 16U squad will conclude the round robin at 8:30 p.m. back at Irwin against Lloydminster.

The 18U playoffs will begin Sunday at the Comp. at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 3 p.m. with the gold medal match and consolation final.

The 15U SunDogs will also host a tournament with the 14U SunDogs among the eight-team field. The 15U SunDogs will open the tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Comp. against RVC Green. They will be back on the floor at noon against RVC Gold and then will face the Prince Albert Smashing Bananas at 6:30 p.m.

The 15U SunDogs will be playing for bragging rights at 8:30 p.m. when they battle the 14U Junior SunDogs to conclude the round robin.

The 14U SunDogs will open the tournament Saturday at the Comp. at 10 a.m. against Saskatoon JCVC, followed by a meeting with VVC at 11 a.m. They will face Strasbourg at 7:30 p.m. followed by their showdown with the 15U SunDogs at 8:30 p.m.

The 15U playoffs will run all day Sunday at Irwin School, beginning at 9 a.m. with the quarterfinals. The championship final will be played at 4:15 p.m. back at the Comp.
