Legends improve from silver in 2012 to gold in 2013
Long playing in the shadow of a volleyball dynasty in their own school, the Fox Valley Legends girls volleyball team are now front and centre after a dominating gold medal performance at the 1A SHSAA Provincial Championships in Glentworth over the weekend.
The Legends won all 14 sets they played at Provincials without allowing more than 18 points in any game.
They finished off their incredible run through the provincial playoffs by defeating Plenty 25-14 and 25-11 in the gold medal final to win the school’s first girls volleyball provincial title.
"It is an unreal feeling actually, it is pretty unbelievable," said Johnathon Schneider, the team’s second-year coach.
Fox Valley won their first girls volleyball medal in school history last year when they won silver after placing fourth in 2010 and 2011.
"I don't really know actually. It started from the basics I guess, basics and then it kind of progressed into a more aggressive style of play," said Schneider of the team’s rise to prominence.
The Legend easily won their five-team round robin with wins over Imperial (25-13, 25-13), Glentworth (25-13, 25-9), Yellow Grass (25-9, 25-17), and Plenty (25-18, 25-15).
They were every bit as dominant in the playoffs as they rolled past Leroy in straight sets (25-12, 25-9) in the quarter-final and then Loreburn (25-13, 25-12) in the semi-finals.
Schneider said the strength of his team was passing and hitting. The team appears poised to stay on the podium at Provincials with only two players moving on to graduation. The Legends were comprised of two grade 12's, five grade 11's, and two grade 10's after graduating five players from their silver medal team in 2012.
The Legends attended six tournaments this season and appeared in the final of every tournament they played at. Their only losses in Saskatchewan were to 5A teams as they punched above their weight all season in preparation for Provincials.
"The goal was to medal in Provincials. The colour wasn't really set in stone," he said.
Fox Valley has long been regarded as one of the top volleyball schools on the boys side of the net. The Legends boys won the gold medal at 1A Provincials last year, their 10th provincial title over the last 12 seasons. They won Regionals this past weekend and will be in Colonsay this weekend for Provincials.
Schneider felt that his team has finally stepped out of the shadow of the boys program.
"I think so yeah, we took a step out and maybe we can start our own dynasty now," said Schneider.
