The criticism levelled against the University of Saskatchewan for its large deficit, around double that per student of other schools, is not fair.
The deficit is largely due to cuts in funding, much of it promised, from the Wall government. The U of S is stuck between a rock and a hard place, nearly done it's new health sciences complex, and just now, finding out that of the $300 million it thought it was getting to fund the nearly complete construction, announced to much fan fair by the government, nearly $100 million is a "loan" that the government expects back. Guess it's like the provincial auditor says, Saskatchewan is running a deficit. The Sask Party is just offloading it to the province's Crown Corps, pension funds and now its universities.
Time to admit Saskatchewan has a deficit. Time for the people of Saskatchewan to demand the Sask Party keep their promises, and stop with the "surprise" cuts in funding to post secondary education, at a time we are short skilled workers, and the film industry, at the expense of becoming an even more resource dependent economy.
Yes, a frustrating time to be a university in Saskatchewan indeed!
