The Green Party of Saskatchewan says the Smart Meter boondoggle would never have happened if SaskPower had been a Crown Co-operative. The almost $50-million lost on the Smart Meters is a terrible loss for the people of this province. This boondoggle is now larger than the $36-million lost on Spudco. This is why the Crowns need to be more accountable to Saskatchewan citizens.

SaskPower ratepayers are suffering because of the Smart Meter fiasco, which only adds more stress on top of the recent skyrocketing of SaskPower bills across the province. In the future, SaskPower should be turned into a Crown Co-operative to prevent a disaster like this from happening again. A Crown Co-op is still owned by the Government of Saskatchewan but operates democratically just like a Co-operative. Each citizen of the province could pay $5 to democratically participate in the Crown Co-op. Crown Co-ops would have public Annual General Meetings, elected Boards of Directors, and pays dividends to the members and issues quarterly financial statements.
