Recently, there have been letters to the editor regarding the city of Swift Current spending and massive tax increases.
In 2013 my city property tax for my business doubled. In 2005, when I was trying to get my business started, I received a letter from the city demanding immediate payment of city taxes or pay the penalty. The same month that it was announced Walmart was getting a five year break on their taxes.
Since then I have watched the city become more and more competitive with local business, which is a serious contradiction of the days when the city had a small base of employees and they supported local business by getting help with all sorts of services, things like independent snow removal, vehicle maintenance, light and power and others.
Now the City has hired employees from many local businesses, forcing employers to try attracting staff from outside the city. Anyone who has ever watched a civic worker can see what a waste of money public employees can be, not very efficient. Add this huge expense to the ridiculous spending, and subsequent huge tax increases, and you can start to see where we went wrong.
The current mayor who got in with the same big money backing that got the previous mayor voted in are responsible. It seems odd to me that most of the same people complaining about tax increases are the ones that failed to put their X beside a fiscal responsible mayoral candidate like Don Robinson.
