Provincial grants should support Senior Citizens' facilities

Recently the Saskatchewan Government, through the Parks and Recreational Department, has approved financial grants to assist a number of community recreational arenas, and as our Seniors' Association recognizes the important roll these facilities play in providing recreational services to our local community, we fully support this program.

However, our Seniors' Association is extremely disappointed that our Senior Centers were excluded, or overlooked, from this grant program.

Recently, a number of smaller clubs had to close their doors due to escalating costs, including utilities along with buildings upkeep.

Many of our seniors are located in rural areas and are dependent on their centers to provide recreational activities they can participate in.

Many of the seniors of today helped support and establish community arenas in their younger years. These seniors also volunteered their time and services to other community activities.

Are they not worth some investment and recognition from our elected provincial officials?

Seniors that can remain active through recreational programs their Senior Centers provide are less likely to have to be placed in Long Term Care. This in turn would benefit our health system.

Our senior centers are used for Wellness Clinics and provide informational services to benefit our seniors. As well, many of our centers are used by other community minded organizations to hold meetings. These Senior Centers play a vital roll in every town and village.

Surely Seniors' needs for recreation should not be overlooked.

In closing, I would ask the Saskatchewan Government to consider including our Senior Centers access to the grants that are currently in place to our community arenas.
