I am writing in regards to the availability of Renal Dialysis offered through the Cypress Health Region.

After recently becoming dependent on Renal Dialysis and living in Swift Current, my husband has been placed on a waiting list of nine people, who we envision must travel considerable distances to receive treatment. It is recommended that my husband have Dialysis three times a week, but due to our circumstances my job and travel issues, he will receive treatment in Regina twice a week.

Swift Current does offer Dialysis to patients in need, but it is only offered three days a week, the remainder of the time the Dialysis machines sit idle. I am concerned that we have the equipment but we do not have the necessary staff to accommodate the need for this life saving service.

The prevalence of Kidney failure is considerable, and presents a growing challenge for the Health Care System. The situation is unavoidable, the numbers and data demonstrate this problem will not diminish, but will continue to grow. The need for two or three more Dialysis nurses in Swift Current is paramount and should be addressed immediately.

We are interested know how many of the other eight patients on the waiting list are concerned, how many have to travel and endure expenses, and have they addressed their concerns. I work full time but have had to reduce my work week to four days. Luckily we have a friend who  will transport my husband one day a week, for who we are compensating. This situation has added to the financial burden and stress on both our lives, plus the inclement weather can also play a part. If the weather is bad my husband cannot travel and thus will not receive the treatment he so desperately needs.

Swift Current has the technology and significant money was spent on the equipment and training, however there are days out of the week that life saving Dialysis is not available to our residents and the South West Region.

If you are a concerned citizen, and have to travel two or three times a week to Regina for Dialysis, please call my husband Craig at 741-4101.
