The following letter is in response to a concern raised in a letter by Joel Sopp from Shaunavon.

Thank you for your letter of concern re: event planning and communications. I agree with your concern, it is hard to host an event without interfering with another community in the Southwest.

Past practice has been that Shaunavon, Assiniboia and Maple Creek have met a few times a year to discuss operational and community issues like you stated and to identify commonalities so we each are not re-inventing the wheel. As of late it was brought up by Mayor Sharon Dickie form Shaunavon to add to the list as other communities have expressed interest in these meetings. I believe it was Eastend, Ponteix, Climax and Frontier and possibly Leader.

We as communities have the option to attend the South West Municipal Government meetings which are held once per month in Swift Current. There is a limited number of municipalities that participate. At the December meeting that was held on Dec. 6th, it was again brought up by Mayor Dickie that possibly we should host this meeting in other communities to try to get more municipalities to attend, Urban and Rural. We are to come up with some ideas for the January meeting to improve on the subject you mention in your letter.

There were also a lot of Municipalities who attended the Intermunicipal Conference held in Regina on Nov 28th and 29th. This was the first conference hosted by the MCDP program that is directed by SUMA and funded by our membership dues. The main point of this informational conference/workshop was to work together as regions and make the dollar go further as the Government is not going to be funding a lot of programs in the future. The big thrust from all communities is Infrastructure and Healthcare as is a concern all across Canada, this is what the Federal and Provincial Governments have to focus our tax dollars on in the future. This in my eyes is creating a "User Pay" situation that we as Municipalities have to work together on.

In saying that, I would suggest that your suggestion is already in the planning stages and we will be talking more as a region in 2013. Thank you for your input and suggestions.
