RCMP Major Crime Unit North

2014-05-13

1:30 p.m.

The RCMP Major Crime Unit North is continuing the investigation into the homicide of Roger Byer.  Roger Byer was last seen on January 20, 2010 in Melfort, Saskatchewan where he was servicing an ATM.  Mr. Byer was employed as a service technician for ATMs across Saskatchewan and his work required him to travel extensively throughout rural communities.

Mr. Byer was reported missing to Prince Albert Police on January 26, 2010 by his daughter after she hadn't heard from him for several days.  Aerial and ground searches of passable roads were conducted on January 29th and 30th; however, these failed to locate Mr. Byer or his vehicle.

On April 1, 2010, shortly before 3:00 p.m., Wakaw RCMP was called when a body was located near a 2009 black GMC Canyon pick-up truck.  The body and vehicle were discovered in a heavily treed, abandoned farm site by a local farmer who was checking his fields in an area south of Highway #41 between Yellow Creek and Meskanaw.  Investigation at the scene included the Wakaw RCMP, RCMP Search & Rescue Team, Prince Albert RCMP Forensic Identification Section and RCMP Major Crime North Unit.  An autopsy determined that the remains were those of Mr. Byer and that his death was a homicide.  Investigators also determined that the vehicle located was Mr. Byers.

Mr. Byer was in possession of tens of thousands of dollars in cash at the time of his disappearance and this money has not been located, said S/Sgt. Larry Brost, Acting Officer in Charge of the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Program. At this time we believe theft was the motive for this homicide; however, we cant confirm this until we locate those who are responsible for Mr. Byers death.

Investigators have received new information relating to a black, heavy-duty, work truck that was in the area at the time Mr. Byer disappeared.  Investigators believe there were at least two people in the vehicle when it was in the area.  Investigators also believe other members of the public may have been in the area at the same time.  I am here today to ask anyone who was in the area of Highway #41, between Yellow Creek and Meskanaw, on January 20, 2010, to take a moment and think back. The truck was seen on a seasonal road just off of Highway #41, which is only used until the first snowfall.  The first snowfall that year didnt come until shortly after Mr. Byer was last seen. If you saw a black, heavy-duty, work truck, with at least two occupants, in this area, please contact your local police service or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477, said S/Sgt. Larry Brost, Acting Officer in Charge of the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Program.

When a family member is the victim of a homicide, families are left with more questions than answers, said S/Sgt. Larry Brost.  Our goal is to answer these questions and bring those responsible before the courts.  Anyone with any information about a black, heavy-duty, work truck in the area of Highway #41, between Yellow Creek and Meskanaw on January 20, 2010 is asked to contact their local police service or CrimeStoppers at 1800-222-8477.
