The Swift Current Municipal RCMP are investigating a possible attempted child abduction which occurred Thursday at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Swift Current's south side.

RCMP received a complaint that an eight-year-old female was walking home on the south side when a red Econoline style van with two men pulled up beside her. An unknown adult male passenger opened the door and told the young girl to get in the van. The girl ran from the male and he chased her for a short distance. The driver of the van was also an unknown male.

The male passenger is described as follows:

- Approximate age of 30 years old

- Caucasian

- Acne on face

- Wearing a dark coloured hoodie

The suspect van is described as follows:

- Older model Econoline style van

- Red in colour

- Silver spoke-style hubcaps

- No licence plate number available

Police spokesman Sgt. Greg Heuer said attempted abductions by strangers actually aren’t that common, but he suggests parents take some precautions with their children anyways.

“Parents should just be aware of where their children are.  We all have cell phones and stuff now to keep in contact with them,” he said.  “Make sure that if they’re going out that maybe they’re walking with other children or adults, if possible, because the more people the safer it is.”

He says parents need to walk a fine line between scaring their kids and explaining what’s at stake.

“Maybe sit down with your children and discuss the situation,” he said.  “What would they do in this situation?  What would you like them to do?”

Heuer said the matter is still under investigation, and rural RCMP detachments have been asked to watch for the vehicle.

After the incident on Thursday, the Swift Current RCMP, with the assistance of Police Dog Services, conducted patrols for the suspect vehicle, however it was not located.

Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Swift Current Municipal RCMP at 306-778-4870 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
