Crews gain upper hand on grassfire north of Swift Current

While fire crews remain at the scene, the threat of property damage is no longer a major concern following a large grass fire which singed Swift Current's northern boundary.

Shortly after 8 p.m. it was confirmed that the fire was under control, but crews would remain at the site overnight to monitor and maintain the situation.

Fanned by 60 kilometre wind gusts, RM of Swift Current and City of Swift Current Fire Departments worked to contain the quickly spreading fire which began shortly after 5 p.m. The fire down the valley north of Swift Current towards Memorial Drive. Buildings in the area include two news schools under construction, the Cypress Regional Hospital, a residential area north of Highway #4.

The Swift Current Mall was closed on Thursday night as a precautionary measure, and RCMP were rerouting traffic around the entire fire area. Curious spectators were being asked by City of Swift Current officials to avoid the area.

A large number of vehicles and spectators were evacuated from along Memorial Drive at approximately 6 p.m. when the wind shifted.

There was also a second grass fire east of the City of Swift Current landfill site, with additional resources directed to fight that fire.

    Commendable work by our emergency services. Too bad they had to tell people the obvious, it wasn't time for gawkers and thrill seekers. They were busy enough with the emergency at hand. It was a grass fire, not a UFO landing!
