Robyn Baxter from the Val Marie Light Horse 4-H Club was the senior category winner at the 2014 Provincial 4-H Public Speaking Competition on April 12.

Baxter's speech entitled Perspectives, allowed her to top a field of eight contestants in the 16 and over category at the provincial event hosted in Yorkton.

The Public Speaking competition is an important component of the 4-H program that helps young people develop confidence and communication skills. During the 4-H year all 4-H members write and present a speech to their club. Competitors earn their spot at the Provincial 4-H Public Speaking Competition after advancing through the club, district and regional tiers of the competition in their age category. The top two club speeches in each age category advanced to district competition, with the best district entires in this district competing in the South West Regional 4-H Public Speaking Competition in Kindersley on March 23. The top two age category representatives from each of four regional 4-H Public Speaking Competitions reached provincials.

The South West Region also produced a pair of top three age group finishers. Sennarey Garven from the Abbey-Lancer 4-H Beef Club was second in the Cloverbud category for the speech My Favourite Thing, while Beechy Multiple 4-H Club member Chastan Sim placed third in the intermediate category with the speech Names.
