Stephan Rumpel from the SCCHS drama department assists a trio of actors with a scene during rehearsal of the Centennial Day Extravaganza which will be hosted Jan. 15 at the Credit Union iPlex.
Dialogue is being rehearsed, dances are being practiced and music is being prepared as part of the gala celebration planned for January 15 to kick off Swift Current's 100th year as a city.
The Centennial Day Extravaganza is scheduled for Jan. 15, commemorating the date back in 1914 when Swift Current officially was granted City status in Saskatchewan.
"It's hard to believe it's here now. We've been working on this for the last two years. And we're here!" Swift Current Centennial Committee Co-Chair Pat Friesen told City Council at their Jan. 6 meeting.
The free community event is being hosted at the Credit Union iPlex, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. There will be a series of family-friendly activities and kids crafts offered in the iPlex lobby. There will also be a by-the-decades historic timeline display highlighting a series of artifacts, photos, videos, and other interesting interactive features to showcase Swift Current's past century. The theme of the event is 'Honouring The Past'.
"Please, by all means, come out and join us. Spend the whole evening or come for a little while, whatever works, but we'd sure like to see everyone out to help kick off 100 years," Friesen said.
The main presentation of the evening will involve a series of speeches, dancing and music connected by an acting narrative entertainment starting at 6:30 p.m.
Individuals who are unable to attend live, and especially for former Swift Current residents who have moved away, the gala entertainment will be streamed live online in its entirety. People can access the live stream of the event at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/swift-current-centennial.
