Ranchman’s Ridin’ & Recitin’ returns for seventh year on Sept. 28

The Ranchman’s Ridin’ & Recitin’ showcase of Western culture, will return for a seventh year during a day long event at Kinetic Exhibition Park on Sept. 28.

"Whether you are from the city or the country, here is an opportunity to witness and be part of Swift Current’s agriculture and western heritage through ranching events, music, food, entertainment and good ol’ hospitality," an invitation to the event notes.

Attracting participants from across the Southwest and neighbouring Alberta, the Sept. 28 event features stock dog trials, a heavy horse Competition, cow-pen show, a ranch horse competition, a ‘hooves and feathers’ show and sale, along with the newly added Young Ranchman’s All Breed Show.

The Young Ranchman’s All Breeds Livestock Show, which runs on Sept. 28 and 29, encourages youth to compete in showmanship and confirmation classes as well as a variety of competitions including public speaking, marketing, judging, art and photography. This added event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at Barns #1, #2 and #3.

Sept. 28 event schedule:

Hooves and Feathers Sale, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Barn #4.

Cattle Cow Pen Show, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Barn #5 Area.

Stock Dogs, noon to 2 p.m., Magnus Newland Arena.

Heavy Horse Evens, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Cutting Arena.

Ranch Horse, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Magnus Newland Arena.

Mounted Shooting Demo, 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Magnus Newland Arena.

In addition, a series of local exhibitors will be on display at the Beer Gardens from noon to 5 p.m., with diverse offerings including a rope-vendor, a saddle-maker, western-style jewellery, and local artists.

Lunch is available on site, as Doc’s Town volunteers will be set up near the barns at the Burnham Booth serving Cowboy Chili at lunch, plus pie and ice-cream throughout the day.  

The evening's events move inside, with a banquet/awards and cowboy entertainment hosted in the Palliser Pavilion. There will be a selection of cowboy poets and musicians, with Midnight Roses performing as the evening's headliners. Banquet admission is $15 for adults, $12 for children aged 12 and under, while children under the age of six are admitted for $8.
