Many Swift Current residents are proudly celebrating the centennial, but none more so than the city’s centenarians such as Owen Malchow, who had the honour of marshaling this year’s parade.

Swift Current centenarian Owen Malchow sits in the lead car while waiting for the parade to begin.

Malchow, who has difficulty speaking since suffering a stroke, was in good spirits prior to the parade, joking referring to it was “a climax on my career.”

“This is the icing on the cake for him,” said his daughter, Connie Klassen, who accompanied Malchow in the lead car.  “He’s quite proud that he’s 100 years old.”

Malchow’s son, Roger, who was also along for the ride, took some time to reflect on the city’s history.

‘I’m amazed how much the place has changed, and I’m not as old,” he said with a laugh.

Malchow has lived his entire life in Swift Current.  He still lives on his old farm, just outside the city, and according to his son still helps a little bit with harvest.

He officially turns 100 on July 18.
