A colourful mural being installed as a bright design feature at the soon to be completed All Saints Catholic School was truly a prideful student effort.

Pete Escanlar, a visual artist from Regina completed an abstract mural for the new school, but all elementary and middle years Catholic students in Swift Current had a hand in completing the project. The 24 foot by 16 foot mural was sectioned into smaller pieces, with a total of 384 kids having a hand in painting the mural

Escanlar was in Swift Current on May 8 to review the completed painting pieces and doing minor touch ups before installation.

"I was quite impressed with how the children managed to do this," Escanlar said, noting he only had minor touch ups in order to complete the project.

The mural was essentially painted as a large scale paint-by-number image, with the mural reproduced onto smaller board and students responsible for colouring in a pre-assigned portion of the mural. Students in pre-kindergarten to Grade 8 participated in the project, with the Grade 8 students helping the pre-Kindergarten to Grade One students complete their painting work.

"The idea was to have each student assigned a grid," Escanlar said. "Each square was one foot by one foot."

The concept for a mural went through a series of phases before the final design was adopted, and a number of key designs and imagery is included in the finished product.

Escanlar had previously worked on a large mural project for the Phillippine Pavillion at Mosaic in Regina, but he noted this would be an important legacy project with St. Patrick and St. Joseph Schools moving under one roof at the new school this fall.

"I would say it's very important because by being involved and being part of it they feel they have some ownership of it. Because of that they will care for it and they will nurture it."
