Swift Current SARCAN Depot Supervisor Kara Spur was presented the SARCAN Cleanliness Award for an Extra-Large Depot by Kevin Acton, SARCAN Director of Operations at the SARCAN Annual Customer Service Awards on May 16.
The Swift Current SARCAN Depot has added another award to their collection.
The local recycling service won their third ever Cleanliness Award at the 2014 SARCAN Recycling Customer Service Awards this past Friday.
“We strive for cleanliness,” said Dale Lowe, the operations manager for the Swift Current SARCAN. “That’s a big deal for us.”
Lowe couldn’t hide how pleased he was with the award, or the employees who made it possible.
“We’re quite proud of our staff over there,” he said. “They do a fine job. There’s a lot of people who’ve been around a long time over there.”
SARCAN recycles everything from plastic bottles to paint and electronics. With such a wide variety of material coming in on a daily basis it’s easy to become messy and disorganized.
Lowe said the fact that the depot doesn’t become a mess is a reflection of how well the staff do their jobs.
“We’re very proud of our people who work at the SARCAN. They take great pride in what they do, and it shows. It’s usually very clean in there.”
Saskatchewan’s 71 depots are placed into four different categories based on size, and graded on cleanliness, sorting accuracy and customer service. Swift Current competes with roughly 10 other depots in the extra-large category. Their two previous cleanliness awards came in 2009 and 2011.
Lowe said it’s good to be recognized, not just for staff moral, but also to get people thinking about recycling. He said they are always looking for ways to get people to recycle more, if having a clean, well-run operation can only help.
“If it’s a dirty and dingy place people probably aren’t going to come, but if it’s bright and clean and inviting and you’ve got a friendly staff, (then) people enjoy coming in.”
