Thanks to the support of three local families, construction is underway at the Swift Current Dog Park. Through equal donations from the Estate of John Mueller, Dave and Susan Procyk and a third donor family who wishes to remain anonymous, over 1,800 feet of fencing will be installed at the dog park to create an enclosed and safe area for dogs and their owners to exercise and socialize.
“We are very happy to help with the development of the dog park,” proclaimed Michele Nephin, daughter of John Mueller, speaking on behalf of the donors. “We are all dog owners and are happy to do something that can give all dogs some of the joy that they bring to us.”
At a cost of approximately $30,000, the construction of the fence was thought to be a long-term plan for the Swift Current Dog Park Committee. But, thanks to the support of these donors, construction is already underway and the committee is busy planning future developments for the dog park.
“We had an open house in March hoping to generate some volunteer support to assist in raising the funds to complete the fence,” explained Marc Butikofer, a volunteer with the committee. ”Graciously, these donors stepped up shortly thereafter and took on that first project for us. Their inspiration will encourage us to continue raising funds to complete future projects such as smoothing out the terrain, building pathways and shelter out at the park.”
Efforts to bring a dog park to Swift Current began in 2010. With the support of a local petition containing over 1200 names committed to the need for a dog park, the Swift Current Dog Park Committee was able to work with the City of Swift Current to designate land and have an access road constructed. Located on the east side of Highway 4 at the end of Hillcrest Drive, the dog park is now a reality will be fully fenced within a few short weeks for dogs and their owners to enjoy.
With lots of work still be completed, further donations continue to be welcomed. Donations can be made at the City of Swift Current. All proceeds will go to support the further development of the dog park. For anyone interested in volunteering, the next meeting of the Swift Current Dog Park Committee will be on May 13 at the Pharmasave Community Room. E-mail email@example.com for more information.
