Today is final day for survey comments
In anticipation of enrolment changes due to the opening of École Centennial School (Pre Kindergarden to Grade 8) and the expansion of Fairview School to include Kindergarten to Grade 8, the Chinook School Division Board is currently reviewing three remaining schools in Swift Current.
These schools are all located in the core of the city and include Ashley Park (size 2,303 square metres), Central (4,105 square metres), and Irwin (6,088 square metres). Once Centennial School opens, the total enrolment of these three core schools is expected to be approximately 685 students. The total functional capacity of the three schools is 1,200 students.
A Swift Current Schools Facilities Committee was formed in 2011, continuing the work of the previous committee in 2008. Comprised of School Community Council members and school administration representing all elementary and middle years schools in the city, the committee presented a report to the Chinook Board of Education with various recommendations based on feedback from school communities and the general public.
Mark Soper, committee Co-Chair, explained that they also made recommendations for the core schools. “From the feedback we were hearing and considering the changes that were planned, our report recommended the Board specifically address the remaining schools in the centre of the city. We asked them to continue gathering feedback from the community, so they can develop a comprehensive plan for those facilities.”
The report suggested that the core facilities plan is consistent with the Board’s vision for all of its schools with respect to condition, functionality, programming and resources.
The Board has listened to the recommendations.
“As a Board, we are putting the recommendations made by the School Facilities Committee into place,” said Chinook Board Chair, Randy Beler, “We are following up on what our parents and community have asked us to do, and we will continue to align plans for the core schools with our vision.”
The feedback collected from the community will be used to assist the Board in making an informed decision. As part of this process, Chinook is asking parents and community members to participate in a Public Opinion survey for the core schools in Swift Current.
Once the survey has been completed, public consultation meetings will be conducted where further details regarding the three schools will be presented for discussion. Parents and community members are invited to attend a consultation so they have a chance to ask questions, share their thoughts and receive information. Notification will be sent through local school correspondence, School Community Councils, and the Chinook website.
The survey link can be found on the Chinook website, and will be available until Sept. 30.
Chinook has posted “Frequently Asked Questions” about the Swift Current schools. In order to be informed of what is planned, interested individuals may want to review the FAQ before completing the survey.
