Swift Current Starbucks Barista Myndra Plazo was busy preparing items for customers receiving free beverages through a Enjoy and Pay It Forward random act of kindness effort provided by an anonymous individual.
There was a definite warm feeling being shared on a cool September morning at Swift Current's Starbucks, with customers surprised today with free coffee.
An anonymous individual purchased a $1,000 gift card in order to surprise Starbucks customers with free beverages today. The Pay It Forward idea has been appearing in communities across Canada, but this is the first known recent instance in Swift Current.
Sharlyn Nickol, Manager of Operations at Swift Current's Pharmasave, noted the Pay it Forward initiative at Starbucks began at 8 a.m. and was still going strong at noon.
"Honestly, we've put two people into tears this morning, happy tears they were just so excited. And most people have just been saying 'you have no idea how you just made my day', 'you have no idea how much you've made my morning,'" Nickol said shortly before noon.
She explained that an anonymous individual approached them just over a week ago and Starbucks organized the Pay it Forward event for today. As part of the initiative to promote community spirit through an intentional act of kindness, those that benefit with a free beverage are asked to do something good for someone else today, without asking for anything in return except to pay it forward to someone else.
Some customers are taking the opportunity to pay it forward immediately, adding a donation in order to make the one-day project extend further into the day.
"The customer response has been just awesome. It is amazing," Nickol said. "We were just really honoured they they came to us and we were excited to put it into action."
They are encouraging people who have benefited from today's generosity to share an individual email message with Swift Current Starbucks (firstname.lastname@example.org), and all responses will be forwarded to the donor.
