Grass fire brought under control in Swift Current's Highland Subdivision

A grass fire, fueled by gusty winds, created some anxious moments for residents in Swift Current's Highland Subdivision north of the TransCanada Highway on Friday afternoon.

Swift Current Fire Department contained the fire after 90 minutes, with all available firefighters on scene with two engines, one tanker truck, a four wheel drive grass fire truck, plus two command vehicles.

The fire spread quickly through tall grass and trees in the area adjacent to the Highland Subdivision, threatening homes along Highland Place and Stenson Place.

The fire originally started south of Balmoral Bay. Firefighters had the grass fire under control by 5 p.m., but stayed on the scene until 7 p.m. extinguishing hotspots. Fire Department personnel also continued fire watches throughout the evening hours.
