Even though gusty winds have made an unwelcome arrival, the community is undeterred and turning out in droves to attend the debut Market Square of 2013 in downtown Swift Current.

Chuck Audette, partner/broker at W.W. Smith, began the new tradition of sounding the bell to signal the start of Market Square activity each Saturday. The addition is part of a sponsorship to highlight a featured business each week. The kick-off Saturday also featured the unveiling of Standard Motors as the presenting sponsor for Market Square in 2013.

In addition to Market Square at the corner of Central Ave. and Chaplin St., and the Farmers' Market under the big tent in the adjoining parking lot, for all of 2013 1st Ave. E. will also be blocked off to feature attractions for every Saturday. The inaugural Saturday features attractions including the Kinsmen Train, a petting zoo, and additional vendors.

"Just seeing this come together again for our third season - with this being our kickoff - bigger and better than last year, it's just phenomenal to see," explained City of Swift Current Chief Administrative Officer Susan Motkaluk.

"We have over 50 vendors registered for today, and last year I believe we ended the season with just over 30. So even for our kick-off market, we have grown substantially from last year. So that fact that we're growing year over year is very exciting. And it's great to see the community come together,"

"The City bringing this together is one piece of it, but it takes everybody to contribute," she said. "The emotions and the time and the energy from all the vendors and different attractions, people are working really hard to come out here."

Market Square runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday until Sept. 28.

The next market square on June 29 will feature a Western Days theme in conjunction with Frontier Days.
